中东研究学，又称近东研究，主要是关于中东地区，即北非的西部、好望角到中国边境（土耳其、以色列、黎巴嫩、巴勒斯坦、约旦、埃及、索马里、伊拉克、伊朗、阿富汗，叙利亚、沙特阿拉伯和多个其他国家）的历史、文化、政治、经济、地质的研究学科，通常也被称为地区研究。
该专业通常被称为东方研究，包括东亚研究、埃及学以及古代文明地区的其他专业研究，有些将中东研究与伊斯兰研究相结合，而有些则将二者划分区别对待。

Middle Eastern Studies is an interdisciplinary field. Translation: if it's your major, you are likely to end up taking courses in a variety of disciplines including (but certainly not limited to) art, philosophy, literature, and history.
What can you do with a major in Middle Eastern Studies? You can be in the Foreign Service, of course. Just like with any liberal arts major, though, you can do virtually anything.
